Words of
Martin Luther King Jr.:
“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow
confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of
all humanity.”
“When I speak of love I am not speaking of some sentimental and weak
response. I am speaking of that force which all of the great religions
have seen as the supreme unifying principle of life. Love is somehow the key
that unlocks the door which leads to ultimate reality.”
“Compassion and nonviolence help us to see the enemy’s point of view, to hear
his questions, to know his assessment of ourselves. For from
his view we may indeed see the basic weaknesses of our own condition, and if
we are mature, we may learn and grow and profit from the wisdom of
the brothers who are called 'the opposition'.”
“I do not minimize the complexity of the problems that need to be faced in
achieving disarmament and peace. But I am convinced that we shall
not have the will, the courage and the insight to deal with such matters
unless in this field we are prepared to undergo a mental and spiritual
re-evaluation, a change of focus which will enable us to see that the things
that seem most real and powerful are indeed now unreal and have
come under sentence of death.”
“We must work unceasingly to lift this nation that we love to a higher
destiny, to a new plateau of compassion, to a more noble expression of
humaneness. I have tried to be honest. To be honest is to confront the
truth. However unpleasant and inconvenient the truth may be, I
believe we must expose and face it if we are to achieve a better quality of
American life.”
